But for versatile the xcavtor is far surperior to the skid steer. You can reach farther, have full 360* access from one spot, better visibility, dig stumps instead of grinding. We do a lot of small lots here on Vancouver island, most lots run from .07 to .25 acres within the city so full sized skid isn't really always practical. It seemed like the cleanup and damage the bobcat or mini ex would do, along with tight spots that still needed hand work anyway wasn't really worth it to get a machine in. The way I see it, a mini skid steer would help me to do a lot/most t of the jobs I am already doing faster/better, with some wood loading. A regular skid steer would help me with some/few of the jobs better and also branch out into other work, eg more lot clearing, more heavy log loading, firesmart, etc.

My biggest issue with the mini skid is turf damage. We currently run the full size type skid loader asv rc50 green tracks which are awesome on the turf and pick up a heavy load, yet the minis I've seen pick up a fraction of the asv combined with turf damage I can't see myself to buying a mini unless it had smooth tracks like the asv. most economical choice would be rubber tire with steel over the tire tracks. Lots of guys do it, but more every year are buying into the idea they need ctl or mtl. If you are on soft yards most of the time and want to avoid rutting, then . Skid steer mounted tree spades are very effective. There are companies all over our area that transplant tree using these attachments. One companies has a fleet of 95XTs with 50" tree spades. These machines have the full counter weight kit (extra 1000 pounds), and rear stabilizers and steel tracks. They buy acreage and harvest the trees for resale.

Too bad they don't have their shit together. We use an old gehl. an old Cat. and a brand new Tackehuchi for skid steers. I like all 3. Cat has the best parts availability system. I work for a case dealership and I would not touch their skidsteers. They are pledged with electrical problems . If the decision was mine I would choose the Takeuchi line with the Kubota engine .
