I have decided it's much easier to disassemble the starter while on the engine. Remove the 2 bolts 3/8 wrench that hold the end cap on and the small one 5/16 wrench that connects the power strap from the starter to the solenoid. Then the 2 solenoid bolts 3/8 wrench. The starter solenoid acts, pulling the spur forward, but fails to engage the starter motor contacts unless the spur gear was meshed into the flywheel gear. Rather then replacing the starters, my mechanic inserted a 1/16"-1/8" shim on the starter bolts between the starter and its .
