I do know that they were bought out by volvo in 2001 I believe. But as far as their durability and reliableness and general reputation, I have no idea. Keep in mind my uses are light. That Scat Trac is largely unchanged as a Volvo. They have given it pilots and I think a Volvo engine. Other than that it is still a Scat Trac in Volvo colors. Which may explain why Volvo has a near zero penetration into the skid steer market. Cat had pilots since they built their skid in 1998. Cat is another model I would give a go, anything but a damn Deere. The amount of energy necessary to refute b.s. is an order of magnitude bigger than to produce it went by the dealer today and checked out their skid steers. i was curious how well the pilot controls worked. i've been reading the threads about everyones concerns with the bobcat skid steers controls. i was very impressed with the volvo. the unit i ran was th MC70b. set the throttle and was very easy to control. the only thing that kind of messed me up is backing up .
That truck saw crazy abuse and put food on the table for years. However it would have to be a smaller skid steer and a light trailer for me to regularly haul with a 1/2ton. I see guys who haul pretty heavy antique tractors around here with trucks and trailers that make ya cringe :hammerhead: But they also go about 30mph tops too.. The tractor/skid steer argument has been beaten to death. If you work on lawns, buy a tractor. If you move a lot of dirt, get a skid steer because it'll bury a tractor 3 ways to Sunday when it comes to moving large quantities of material.
I have never run the CAT track machine. I ran a 190 and came away with the same impression you did. I would hate to have to make a living excavating with that machine. Another option would be a large wheeled skid steer (CASE 90 or 95XT, BOBCAT S300 or equivilent) with the Loegren tracks. This would give you the flexibility of running wheels or . I no longer do that type of work and am going to buy a new(er) skid steer with a cab. Anticipated uses are leveling, grading, spreading gravel, etc. Where I live now it is basically all farm land with no rocks for 100 miles and flat as a pancake. With a skid steer, you can get grapple attachment for debris handling which is helpful for landscaping . If you are looking for floatation/traction, there is nothing better than an rubber track drive loader. If your gain in productivitiy and availability overcomes the additional maintenance cost (skid steers cost about .00/hour for tires), then it is the machine for you.
